PAGHMAN TRUTZ HIGH SCHOOL - Peace Schools
within the Refugee Camps
The School
The PEACE SCHOOL, founded and run by “Kinderhilfe Afghanistan” is a unique prototype of a school and it is
one of the most modern schools among the refugee camps of Pakistan.
At the “Paghman Trutz High School” (named after the 4-year-old son
of the Eroes family, who died in Pakistan), only Afghan women are
teaching. Here, the refugee girls receive an excellent education.
This means that later on they will have the skills and the knowledge
to work and teach in their country, thus being able to aid in the
rebuilding of their country.
In the summer of 2001, the German Embassy in Pakistan covered the
costs of a basic renovation of the old school building and the
purchase of new computers.

Students
The number of our students rises constantly. At present, there are
more than 600 children (6 to 17 years of age) and adults, studying
in 3 shifts. 80% of the students are girls, one third of them
orphans. During morning and evening hours, we teach adult
illiterates to read and to write. The school building is most
efficiently used.

Teachers

The director of school is Mr. Muhammad Janna Alem, one of our most
reliable coworkers on staff in the years of soviet occupation from
1987 to 1990. Only women are working as teachers at our schools. At
present, we employ 26 Afghan women. They were educated in
Afghanistan before the war and trained by UNO (United Nations
Organization) or assisting organizations. This education is based on
a program of the UNO for most effective promotion of basic knowledge
within developing countries. Our teachers and students are
enthusiastic about up-to-date teaching methods compared to the
simplistic education practiced at Quran schools of the Taliban. The
teachers earn a monthly salary of about 50 EURO. This salary is
reasonable for the district and depends on age, family status, and
qualification of the teacher. Thus, with their salary our teachers
are able to support their families.

Curriculum
For 25 hours a week, the following classes are
taught: Dari and Pashtu, the native Afghan languages, English,
Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Healthy Living,
Drawing, and Religion. Since 2001, Afghan women with degrees in
philology are teaching German, which is unique at Afghan refugee
schools. Especially gifted students receive computer instruction
classes.
With the assistance of the UNO we introduced the subject “Education
for Peace”.
Education for Peace
This is a central topic to our curriculum.
After 20 years of war this is an extremely important subject!
Tuition for our schools is free. In addition, Kinderhilfe Afghanistan pays for all the books and supplies. Notebooks, pencils,
and books are bought at a local basar of Peshawar. Costs amount to
about 30 EURO per student and year. |

The
School Building
The school building we rent is a simple, clean
eight room house located at the outskirts of Peshawar and
immediately next to the refugee camps. The house has running
drinking water and electricity (not taken for granted within the
camps). The rooms cannot be heated so far. The classrooms are
furnished with simple chairs and tables.
