Sir Peter Ustinov Friedensschule
Paghman
On 31 December 2003 the Sir Peter Ustinov
peace school Afghanistan in the province Paghman (50 km north of
Kabul) was opened. 1300 guests (800 children and 500 adults),
predominantly from the surrounding four villages participated in the
opening celebration. The setting was spectacular under very blue
skies with bitter cold at an altitude of about 700 feet. The Afghan
television was present and the footage was broadcast several times.
Among the Afghan honour guests the were the assistant deputy of the
Afghan Minister of the Interior, Shamamhmood Miakhel, the
secretaries of education of Kabul and Paghman, the province governor
(Prime Minister) of Paghman, 25 Maliks and Mullhas (mayors, local
councils and village ministers) of the surrounding villages as well
as three members of the Loja Jirga.
Another special guest of honour was the German three-star general
Goetz Gliemeroth, commander of the NATO/ISAF troops, who gave the
laudatio. Colonel I.G. Retzer, commander of the German Federal Armed
Forces contingent in Afghanistan was also present. School begins
after the winter holidays on 15 March 2004. By then the school will
be finished. Approximately 900 children (about 600 girls 300 boys)
can go to school, finally, after 20 years.
In an enthusiastic speech, the headmaster of the girls, Mrs. Nilofar
pointed out what the schools means, in particular for girls.
Special thanks to Sir Peter Ustinov and all aids, who contributed to
the building of this wonderful school. The new school has
established a sponsorship with a German “UNICEF Sir Peter Ustinov
school” in Monheim, Germany.
