The Village School of Zawa
On December 1, 2002, we opened a school for
800 pupils in the village Zawa, about 40 km south of Jalalabad and
in the immediate vicinity of Tora Bora. The Afghan Minister of
Education and the Governor of the province were present. A school
built of stone was unheard of in this poor high altitude area (1,800
m above sea level). The building was a challenge for everyone and in
many ways. Workers had to leave their families for 6 months. Often
transportation of material on unsteady, bumpy paths was adventurous.
There were a lot of problems in completing the school because the
purchase of wood for the school benches proved difficult. The
forests were cut down during the years of war, and the bombings of
the recent past also had an adverse effect. Prices for wood were
rising dramatically.
An Afghan television team arrived from Kabul to collect footage for
a 1-hour-shoot about that school, which was broadcast several times.
In that particular district, the war of the last 20 years had
enormous consequences. Therefore, we want to pay special attention
to this area and we wanted to help these people by establishing the
school.
